Socrates Divided Us. The Pre-Socratics Knew Better. And So Did Your Olive Oil.

Why your body already understands what Western medicine forgot

Most people don't question Socrates. He's the hero of Western thought. The martyr of the examined life. The man who drank the hemlock rather than stop asking questions.

But there is something Socrates did that your body is still paying for — biologically — two and a half thousand years later.

He separated the mind from the body.

And in doing so, he handed Western civilization a framework that would eventually reduce food to fuel, the body to a machine, and medicine to a system of interventions applied from the outside in. The cost of that error shows up today in how we eat, how we age, and what we reach for when something goes wrong.

Before him — in the tradition we call pre-Socratic — the Greeks understood something entirely different. Heraclitus said it plainly: Panta rhei. Everything flows. The body was not a mechanism to be managed. It was a system in constant, dynamic relationship with what surrounded it — the air, the soil, the food, the season. Nothing was separate. Nothing was inert.

The word for this was physis. Not physics in the modern sense. Closer to nature — but nature understood as a living, unified whole of which the human body was an expression, not an occupant.

My partner and co-founder, Athan Gadanidis, is Greek. He holds the pre-Socratic view. When he encounters Plato or Aristotle he does not find heroes. He finds the beginning of a very long error. After more than a decade of working alongside him — and living this protocol daily on Aegina Island — I have come to understand why.

What Hippocrates actually said

Hippocrates — the father of medicine — did not separate the body from its environment. His medicine was observational, seasonal, and deeply attentive to what a person consumed.

Hippocrates called early harvest olive oil medicinal. Not culinary. Not flavourful. Not a cooking medium. Medicinal.

He was specific about harvest timing because he understood — without the instruments we now have — that oil pressed from unripe olives carried something the ripe-harvest oil did not. A potency. A biological activity. What we now measure in milligrams per kilogram of active biophenols, he measured in effect on the body.

A century later, Pedanius Dioscorides compiled De Materia Medica — the world's first evidence-based pharmacological formulary. It remained the authoritative reference for fifteen centuries. No medical text has held authority for that long before or since. Olive oil appears throughout it — not as a carrier, not as a base, but as a therapeutic agent in its own right.

The ancient knowledge did not disappear. It retreated into culture — into the daily habits of people living longer and with less chronic disease than almost anywhere else on earth.

What the science recovered

In 2005, Gary Beauchamp and his colleagues at the Monell Chemical Senses Center identified the compound responsible for the peppery sting at the back of the throat you feel when you swallow a high-quality early harvest olive oil. He named it Oleocanthal — and found that it inhibits the same inflammatory enzymes as ibuprofen. Not similarly. Not approximately. Through the same biological mechanism.

Hippocrates had been right for 2,400 years and nobody had the instrument to prove it.

Oleocanthal is one of 30+ active biophenols in High Phenolic EVOO — specifically the derivatives of hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol. Together they act on oxidative stress, inflammatory pathways, vascular health, and neuroprotection. The EU recognised this in Regulation 432/2012, permitting a specific health claim for oils with a minimum of 250 mg/kg of these compounds. Most olive oils on supermarket shelves don't come close.

Most people who believe they are eating well do not know this. That gap — between intention and biological effect — is exactly what the Aristoleo+ protocol was built to close.

Why MicroDosing changes everything

Active biophenols have a short half-life in the bloodstream. A single large serving — even of a certified HP EVOO — delivers a spike and a drop. The pre-Socratics understood the body as a system in flow. The protocol follows that logic.

Five sprays, five times a day. Each set of five sprays delivers 1 mg of active biophenols — no dilution, no cooking, no degradation. Timed throughout the day to maintain consistent biophenol levels rather than a single large serving that metabolizes and disappears.

The oils we choose for Aristoleo+ carry a minimum of 1,250 mg/kg of active biophenols — consistently above the EU health claim threshold by a factor of five. Not a condiment. By any rational measure, a functional food with measurable biological activity — one that Hippocrates would have recognized immediately.

If it doesn't bite, it can't fight.™

What this has to do with you

I am an active septuagenarian. I live on Aegina Island, in the Saronic Gulf — a short crossing from the coastline where Hippocrates practiced and these ideas were first spoken. I do yoga and Tai Chi. My son Nick monitors my protein intake. I take creatine. And I MicroDose Aristoleo-certified HP EVOO every day.

I am not writing from theory. I am writing from the Aegean.

What I observe — in myself, in Athan, in the producers and researchers and practitioners who orbit this work — is that the people who close the gap between how long they live and how well they live are not the ones who find the right pharmaceutical. They are the ones who stop treating the body as a machine that needs fixing and start treating it as a system that needs supporting.

The pre-Socratics understood this. Hippocrates practiced it. Dioscorides documented it. The science has confirmed it in molecular language.

The only question remaining is personal.

The examined body

Socrates said the unexamined life is not worth living. Athan would say — and I agree — that Socrates was asking the wrong question. It was never about examining the life from the outside in. It was about living it from the inside out.

Whole.

Undivided.

In flow.

Panta rhei.

Ready to support your body from the inside out?

The Aristoleo+ 30-Day Reset Protocol delivers certified HP EVOO in the precise MicroDosing format — five sprays, five times daily — so your body receives consistent biophenol support throughout the day.
