The Olive Oil Shot Trend Didn't Create a Standard.

It Created a Race to Borrow One.

Six years ago, during COVID lockdown, I published a video called "High Phenolic Olive Oil: Why I Take It As a Daily Shot." It quietly picked up 27,000 views over the years — a niche habit, for a niche audience who already understood why.

This year, the habit went mainstream. A well-known model and founder told a national magazine that a morning shot of olive oil and lemon, taken before anything else, is one of her three non-negotiables.

Within days, the clip was everywhere. Within weeks, a small industry of olive oil brands had rushed to attach themselves to the moment — one of them even publishing a "review" of morning-shot brands that happened to include its own product among the ones being reviewed.

Here's what's interesting: she never named a brand. Not once. Which means every brand now riding this trend chose itself.

That's worth sitting with, because it tells you something about how this particular gold rush is being run. When you can't win on a verified number, you win on "borrowed authority" — and it shows up in three familiar costumes.

There's the credentialed name standing next to the bottle, doing the work a lab report should be doing — a physician or scientist lending their reputation to a product line, sometimes through a co-branded book or a partnership announcement. It's smart marketing. It is not a substitute for knowing what's in the bottle. In more than one well-documented case, oils marketed this way — with bold, uncontextualized potency claims — have been independently lab-tested and found rancid despite the claims. A credential is not a certificate of analysis.

There's a sharper version of this same costume: a brand that listed two independent scientists as partners and advisors on its site, complete with photos and bios, without their knowledge or consent. Both only found out when it was flagged to them. Both had to formally request their names be taken down. Borrowed authority, at its most extreme, doesn't even ask permission first.

There's the lab coat, worn by a distributor, not a chemist — stock photography and white-coat styling standing in for an actual certificate of analysis. A lab coat is not a lab result.

And there's the website built like an infomercial: long-form "education" that walks you, conveniently, straight to an Add to Cart button, sometimes with a quiet disclosure buried near the bottom that the article's own product is among the ones being "reviewed." Authority reads like journalism. It's copy.

None of these three are dishonest, exactly. They're just answering a different question than the one that matters. The question was never does this brand sound credible. It's does this oil clear the threshold where the compounds actually do anything — and that number doesn't come from a coat, a co-branded book, or a listicle. It comes from a lab.

The bite is the point

She described the taste of her own shot as "a big gulp of salad dressing." Pleasant. Mild. A little citrusy.

I want to pause there, because if your olive oil tastes like salad dressing, you are not getting the full benefit of what a shot like this can do. A genuinely high-phenolic extra virgin olive oil has a peppery bite at the back of the throat. Sometimes it makes you cough.

That's the compound doing its work. It's called oleocanthal, and it inhibits the same inflammatory enzymes as ibuprofen, through the same pathway — a much gentler, food-level dose, but a real pharmacological action, not folklore.

The lemon isn't incidental either, and this is something I learned long before any of this was trending, through years of daily practice. Lemon doesn't neutralize the bitterness — it bridges the palate. It makes the shot repeatable. And daily repeatability is the entire mechanism. A functional food you abandon after three days because the sensation is too confronting isn't a protocol. It's an experiment that failed.

The trend has discovered the ritual. It has not discovered the standard. That gap is where everything that matters lives — and it's also exactly the gap the borrowed-authority brands are racing to paper over rather than close.

What the science actually says about inflammation

The instinct behind this trend — daily, on an empty stomach, as a non-negotiable — is sound, because chronic low-grade inflammation is now understood as a common thread running through some of the most serious conditions in modern medicine, not just a wellness buzzword.

A few of the specific connections worth knowing. (You'll likely know these compounds as "polyphenols" — that's the term that's been circulating in every headline about this trend. The more accurate name, and the one we use, is active biophenols: the derivatives of hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol that actually do the work.)

  • Cardiovascular disease. The landmark EUROLIVE trial found a Mediterranean diet rich in high-biophenol olive oil reduced major cardiovascular events, with effects tracking the biophenol content of the oil used, not just the fat profile. The result was the EU Health Claim 432-2012

  • Metabolic and lipid outcomes. A 2025 randomized controlled trial (Kourek, Makaris, Magiatis, et al., Nutrients) found that a smaller volume of a higher-biophenol oil produced significantly better cholesterol outcomes than a larger volume of a lower-biophenol oil, at matched total active-biophenol intake. Dose and concentration are not the same variable, and the second one is the one most people are missing.

  • Cognitive resilience. Oleocanthal and its relatives have been studied for their potential role in clearing amyloid-beta protein, one of the pathological hallmarks associated with Alzheimer's disease, through effects on lysosomal function in brain tissue.

  • Systemic inflammatory markers. Regular consumption of high-phenolic EVOO has been associated with measurable reductions in inflammatory markers such as CRP and oxidized LDL — the kind of markers clinicians increasingly use to track biological, not just chronological, age.

None of this is about olive oil in general. It is about specific olive oil — oil tested for active biophenol content (the derivatives of hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol that carry the bioavailable compounds), verified above the threshold where those compounds become physiologically active. The EU recognizes a health claim only for oils carrying a minimum 250 mg/kg, verified by nuclear magnetic resonance. Below that floor, you have a condiment. You do not have a protocol.

Most olive oil on the market — including most bottles labelled "premium," "cold-pressed," or "estate" — does not clear that floor. No morning-routine video, no celebrity quote, and no doctor's name on a gift box can tell you whether the bottle in your kitchen does.

What a protocol actually looks like

Since discovering high phenolic olive oil in 2012, I've taken shots of the highest verified count available, morning and evening, and layered other high-phenolic oils through the day — as dressing, in cooking — so the functional food has a continuous, specific role in the daily routine. This isn't a wellness gesture. It's a structured delivery sequence built around the half-life of the active compounds and the logic of consistent daily saturation.

The morning shot anchors the day. The evening shot closes it. What happens in between is deliberate — informed by how oleocanthal and oleacein metabolize, and what sustained presence produces over time in inflammatory load and biological age markers.

That's what fourteen years of practice, built on the science, looks like from the inside. It bears very little resemblance to a tablespoon of oil and lemon before coffee — and it bears even less resemblance to a doctor's name printed on someone else's box.

Why this isn't theoretical for us
