My mom used to sing the praises of emerald green parsley saying it was so much more than a garnish that's all too often tossed.
I love the idea of the subtle sweetness of pears with the refreshing bite of parsley and the powerful health benefits of high phenolic EVOO.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup frozen pear chunks (or fresh ripe pears - skin too!)
- 1/2 banana (fresh or frozen)
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
- 1/4 cup plain yogurt
- 1/4 cup almond milk (or other preferred milk)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1-2 tsp (5-10 ml) PowerShot High Phenolic EVOO (added after blending to prevent hydrogenation)
Instructions:
- Blend together the frozen pear chunks, banana, parsley, yogurt, almond milk, and lemon juice until smooth and creamy.
- Pour the smoothie into a glass.
- Drizzle A+ PowerShot or spray A+ MicroDosing over the top of the smoothie to desired amount.
Phenolic Powerhouse:
This smoothie is a powerhouse of phenolics! Here's a breakdown of the phenolic benefits:
- Pears: Although not as rich in phenolics as some other fruits, pears still contain phenolic acids that have been linked to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
- Parsley: This leafy green herb is surprisingly rich in various phenolic compounds, including flavonoids. These offer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, potentially contributing to improved heart health and cognitive function.
- High Phenolic EVOO: The star of the show! This EVOO is loaded with health-promoting phenolic compounds, primarily various types of antioxidants. These antioxidants may help reduce inflammation, improve heart health, protect against certain cancers, and even offer some cognitive benefits.
By combining these ingredients, you're creating a smoothie rich in a variety of phenolics and essential nutrients offering a range of potential health benefits.
Flavor Considerations:
- Parsley Power: Parsley has a strong, slightly peppery flavor. Start with a ¼ cup and adjust to your preference. You can add less for a subtler parsley taste.
- Sweetener Option: If you prefer a sweeter smoothie, add a drizzle of honey or maple syrup before blending.
- Milk Choice: Feel free to substitute the almond milk with another type of milk (dairy or non-dairy) based on your preference. Opt for unsweetened varieties to avoid adding extra sugar.
EVOO Intensity:
Similar to other recipes, start with a light drizzle of high phenolic EVOO (after blending) and taste before adding more. The peppery flavor can be quite strong.
